Most of the houseplants that you know and love are born in the rainforest, and so they're not fans of direct sun and dry, scorching air. But others are born for the summer months, and they're the ones that are best to grow during the heat! When it comes to thinking of the best houseplants to grow in summer, you should think desert plants...succulents are perfect!
When you're growing the 3 plants below, make sure you look around your house and find the perfect sunny spot for your houseplant. It should get about 8 hours of semi-direct or very bright light a day. Better yet, plonk them on a balcony and bring them inside when you want to green your space!
1. Euphorbia (African Milk Tree)
This succulent is native to Central Africa, so it's going to love the hot and dry conditions. We love that it adds a structural element to your home decor. This plant will grow well in a pot with minimal watering - so make sure you keep the soil dry before giving the plant another drink. It's low maintenance and good for beginner houseplant owners. Beware, the African Milk Tree isn't a pet-friendly plant. You should keep this one away from your dogs and cats!
2. Jade Plant (Crassula ovata)
The Jade Plant is one of our absolute favorite houseplants because it is super low maintenance and has unique foliage. Plump, waxy leaves grow in a really structural way to create a look that's gentle yet strong. The leaves on your Jade plant get super dusty, so use our Leaf Cleaning Gloves and Protect Spray with Neem frequently to catch dust and other residue.
3. Crown of Thorns (Euphorbia milii)
The Crown of Thorns is perfect for a beginner houseplant owner that wants an easy care plant that throws out lots of flowers. The stems of this plant are thorny and thick, so it's not a great one if you have children. BUT, if you can find a spot out of harms way, that gets 4-6 hours of sunlight a day, you'll be blessed with gorgeous blooms all through summer.
