We wanted to give you our top picks for variations you can get. Get that notebook out and let's go!
Monstera Deliciosa
We are not above putting the iconic OG of the plant world on this list. You know her, you love her, and she's here to stay. She earned her nickname "Swiss Cheese Plant" for good reason: its fenestrations form like windows due to sunlight.
Care guide:
- Sunlight: Bright, indirect light. They're from the tropics, so direct sunlight can and will scorch their leaves.
- Watering: Water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry.
- Maintenance: Low. They are one of the easiest houseplants you can own!
Monstera Adansonii
Swiss cheese Queen right here: we've actually included a photo of one of our planty experts, Swiss cheese! They are a gorgeous trailing variety that often loves growing in hanging baskets or climbing up a pole.
Care guide:
- Sunlight: Bright, indirect sunlight and moderate temperatures.
- Watering: Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry. Don't let it sit in overly wet soil.
- Maintenance: Low. They are as forgiving as they are fast-growing. Great for beginners.
Monstera Thai Constellation
This is where you start dipping into collectors' territory. Unique for its beautiful marbled patterns of cream and pale green, they resemble a constellation… funny that.
Care guide:
- Sunlight: Bright, indirect light is essential for maintaining healthy growth and strong variegation. It does require more light than a non-variegated Monstera.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels slightly dry.
- Maintenance: Medium to high. They are slow growing compared to non-variegated Monsteras and it can take several years to develop into a mature plant. Patience is essential.
Monstera Deliciosa Albo Variegata
This is one you have probably seen and dreamed of. It has naturally occurring, genetically unstable variegation that can change massively from leaf to leaf, making each and every leaf completely unique. It is one of the most sought after plants and for good reason; they never look the same.
Care guide:
- Sunlight: Bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight will burn the white parts of the leaves very quickly, and too little light will cause them to lose their variegation.
- Watering: Water only when the top inch or two of soil feels dry to the touch.
- Maintenance: High to very high. Bright indirect light, controlled watering, and proper soil structure all contribute to its long-term success. It needs close monitoring.
