Top Herb To Grow Inside: Basil

We're obsessed with Basil, and put it on almost everything! This is a Mediterranean herb, which means that it is used to growing in Italian countryside, or places that are equally as exotic! Think about this when you're growing basil inside with your houseplants; it needs a nice warm spot with some sunlight. If you have a windowsill, then pop your pot of basil there - it will love at least 6 hours of sunlight a day.

Tips for growing Basil indoors:

  • Grow your Basil with good quality seeds or seedlings, not the potted basil from the grocery store...that's designed for 1 use only!
  • The more you trim the leaves, the bushier and brighter it will grow! Try snipping off the tips regularly, and always make sure there are at least a handful of mature leaves on the plant - it means it can continue to absorb that sunlight to push out more growth.
  • Keep the soil moist, but not too wet. Watering your basil plant every 5-7 days is ideal.

Easiest herb to grow inside: Mint

Who doesn't love a mojito? Mint is so versatile. It sits just as proudly in a Moroccan stew, as it does a gin and tonic! The thing we most love about Mint is just how hardy it is. With the right conditions, this stuff can grow like a weed! It can also bounceback from a bit of neglect, so it's a foolproof option for beginner houseplant owners.

Tips for growing mint indoors:

  • Put it in a bright spot and let is get 4+ hours of sunlight a day. It doesn't love direct sun, so if you have a bright but indirect sun location, that will do fine!
  • Let the soil dry before watering. Every 7 days or so should work.
  • Curl the long stems on top of the soil - it will mean the plant will take root in multiple locations and you will enjoy a bushier, more fruitful plant!

The wild card herb to grow indoors: Chives

If you ask us, Chives are the unsung heroes of our indoor herb garden. If you're a brunch queen, then you'll get a lot of use from these guys. Plus, they add an oniony flavor without having to chop! We love that Chives grow in small pots, and are long and narrow - perfect for those who are tight on space!

Tips for growing Chives indoors:

  • Chives need some decent bright light. Put them on your windowsill next to the basil, and it will live its best life!
  • Make sure soil is well draining. You don't want the roots to be sitting in water. Let it dry out between watering.
  • Snip leaves about an inch above the soil to promote new growth

So there you have it! 3 easy to grow herbs for the indoor gardener. If you're looking to expand beyond houseplants, and wow your dinner party guests with fresh, homegrown herbs, give these a try!
