Have you ever had a houseplant that just suddenly drops leaves? Sure, some of it can be seasonal and natural, but it's enough to cause freak out! Well, if your leafy friend is starting to look a little less leafy, don’t panic. Most of the reasons that houseplants drop leaves are easy to fix...you just need to pinpoint the culprit! These are the 3 most common reasons your houseplants are dropping their leaves.
1. Your Houseplant Is Adjusting to a New Environment
Did you just bring your plant home? Move it to a new spot? Give it a fresh pot? Houseplants can be a little dramatic when their environment changes. Some plants, like fiddle leaf figs and ficuses, are especially known for throwing a fit (aka dropping leaves) when things shift.
How to fix it:
- Be patient! Your plant needs time to adjust.
- Keep conditions consistent—avoid moving it around too much.
- Use something like Enrich Powder to improve your plant's ability to withstand stress
2. You Don't Have Your Watering Regime Right
It can be easy to overwater and underwater your houseplants - and leaf drop is a tell tale sign. Take a look at the leaves that are dropping. Are they a bit squishy? They might be overwatered. Are they dry and crispy? They might need more of a drink. Some plants can be pretty tolerant to watering changes, but others, like a Calathea, can be picky AF!
How to fix it:
- Stick to a fairly consistent watering regime.
- Always check the soil before watering. If it's still moist, odds are you need to wait.
- Use Grow Concentrate to improve your plant growth
3. Your Houseplants Need More Light
Light is your plant's powerhouse. They use it for energy. If you're noticing the leaves on your houseplant turn yellow and drop, it's probably too little light? If you see crispy, brown spots before the leaves fall, it might be too much direct sunlight. If your plants just seem quite sparse and leggy, it's a telltale sign they need more light.
How to fix it:
- Most of your plants will need bright indirect sunlight, but research their preference in a bit more detail
- if your plant isn't getting enough sun, invest in Grow Lamp
- If it’s getting too much sun, move it slightly away from direct rays or use a sheer curtain to soften the light.
