When I first moved into my new house, I was looking for a houseplant that added a sense of structure to my home decor. I was busy, so it had to be hardy, tough and ready for some neglect! Most importantly, I wasn't sure what the light situation was like in my new apartment. Did I have bright indirect light? Would most of my corners be too dark to grow houseplants? So, I decided to buy lots of Snake Plants. Sanseverias are hardy, structural houseplants that can tolerate almost every indoor garden. I love them because they're so low maintenance.
If you're asking yourself: how do I care for a snake plant? You've come to the right place. I have outlined all the basic tips to care for this hardy houseplant below:
What's the best light for Snake Plants?
They love bright, indirect light but will grow happily in a dark corner - you just won't see as many new leaves. For some of us, that's fine because it saves constant repotting!
In the summertime, it's best to move your Snake Plants away from scorching direct sun or hot windows because it can burn the houseplant's leaves. Instead, keep it in a nice indoor spot. We love them in the bedroom because they're proven to purify the air!
How often should I water my Snake Plant?
These houseplants are super easy when it comes to watering. It will take a long period without a drink until they start to wilt, so don't wait for the leaves to start drooping. Instead, check the soil with your finger. If it's bone dry, give it a deep water.
During the winter time, you will water your Snake Plant even less frequently than other times of the year. That's totally ok! Make sure that you use Grow Concentrate every time you water your Snake Plant. It will drive new growth, new leaves and make for a healthy plant.
What's the best soil for a Snake Plant?
A good well draining mix is a bonus for this plant. They don't want wet feet, so you can even use a succulent mix. Otherwise, get a standard potting mix and throw in some orchid bark or perlite to add some texture and drainage to the soil. You should use Enrich Powder as well for strong, resilient roots and healthy soil.
Make sure you check your Snake Plant once a year to see if it needs repotting. You can do that by looking at the drainage hole. Are there roots poking out? It's time for a repot. If the top soil is compact and hard, it could also mean that your Snake Plant is ready for a new pot.
What is the best fertilizer to use for Snake Plants?
We the Wild's Grow Concentrate and Enrich Powder are perfect for Snake Plants because they're bioactive, not made from synthetic chemicals.
The Grow Concentrate is fast release, so it will promote new shoots and healthier foliage, while the Enrich Powder will work under the soil to prevent root rot, gently nourish roots and detoxify soil. It's full of beneficial nutrients and micronutrients that houseplants like Snake Plants love.
What are the most common pests for Snake Plants?
Your Snake Plant isn't that likely to get pests. The long straight foliage doesn't make for a good hiding place for those pesky houseplant pests. BUT, overwatering and other issues can lead to fungal issues.
In the event that you do get pests, it's likely to be Mealybugs or Spider Mites. You can wipe pest residue and dust away with our Leaf Cleaning Gloves. For flying plant pests, use these sticky traps. They're made from compostable corn fibre, not plastic!
Are Snake Plants Safe For Pets?
Snake Plants are toxic to most animals, including common pets like dogs and cats. If your dog or cat is prone to chewing leaves, you should avoid having a Snake Plant at home.
